The exterior surfaces are decorated with intricate deep relief carvings in a dense botanical and zoomorphic arrangement. The foliate patterns are interspersed with figures of monkeys, rabbits, and birds. Both the front and back covers feature a central rectangular panel containing a carved architectural motif of a multi-storey pavilion or palace with a tiered roof and external staircases. The spine is also fully decorated with carved floral and foliate designs. The interior is lined with a deep purple velvet and consists of two wooden boards joined to a central wooden spine by two small brass hinges. No maker’s marks, labels, or inscriptions are visible on the wood or the lining. The wood displays a dark, aged patina throughout.
