A PERSIAN REPOUSSE SILVER TANKARD WITH CALLIGRAPHY AND FIGURATIVE SCENES, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A Persian silver tankard of tapered cylindrical form, standing on a stepped, flared circular foot. The body is extensively decorated using the ghalam-zani technique, featuring high-relief repoussé and chased work. The upper section is encircled by a band of four lobed cartouches containing Persian calligraphy executed in Nasta’liq script. The main frieze depicts a continuous narrative of courtly life, including multiple figures in traditional dress, some seated within architectural settings and others mounted on horseback amidst a landscape of hills and trees. The rim and base are finished with repeating scrolling foliate and wave motifs. The tankard is fitted with a heavy cast S-scroll handle adorned with acanthus leaves and foliate scrolls. The interior and base are plain polished silver.
