Lot 64: ANDRÉ DUTERTRE, MURAD BEY, HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVING FROM DESCRIPTION DE L'ÉGYPTE

A hand-coloured engraving titled MOURAD BEY, part of the COSTUMES ET PORTRAITS series from the landmark publication Description de l’Égypte, produced between 1809 and 1822 following Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. The portrait is based on a drawing by André Dutertre (1753–1842) and depicts the Mamluk chieftain Murad Bey in an interior setting, seated in traditional dress and holding a fly-whisk. An arched window to the left provides a view of a distant landscape with palm trees. The engraving exhibits a clearly defined plate mark from the intaglio printing process. The plate is inscribed Dessiné par Dutertre to the lower left margin and Gravé par [illegible] to the lower right, though web consensus identifies the engraver as Nicolas Ponce. The top centre bears the series title COSTUMES ET PORTRAITS. The verso features handwritten titles and displays pigment transfer from the hand-colouring on the front.
