Lot 65: A PAIR OF HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVINGS OF INDIAN COSTUMES, L. MASSARD AND CHOUBARD, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

A pair of hand-coloured engravings on paper, depicting traditional Indian ethnographic costumes. These prints were produced by the artist L. Massard and the engraver Choubard, whose names are inscribed as L. Massard del. at the lower left and Choubard sc. at the lower right of both images. The first engraving, titled Monts Himalaya. above JEUNE FILLE., shows a young woman in regional attire including a green draped skirt and a red veil, holding a parrot. The lower margin carries the text Voy. en Asie. Fraser P. 437. referencing the travels of James Baillie Fraser. The second engraving, titled Delhi. above COSTUME DE LA COUR., depicts a man in an ornate yellow floral-patterned courtly tunic and turban. This plate is inscribed Voy. en Asie. Heber Pag 277. referencing the journals of Bishop Reginald Heber. The plates are executed with fine line engraving and detailed hand-colouring, showing clear rectangular plate marks and sharp impressions. The sheets have irregular, raw margins. The reverse of each print bears a pencil number 12 at the lower left and a pencil inventory number V250547-89 below it.
