Lot 383: A LARGE VINTAGE HAND-KNOTTED SPANISH CARPET, CIRCA 1950S

This large hand-knotted wool carpet is of Spanish origin and dates to circa 1950s. The rug is designed in the Savonnerie style, featuring a central circular floral medallion with a multi-petalled pink flower surrounded by golden-yellow foliate scrolls. This central motif is flanked by elongated scrolling foliate sprays in gold and pink tones. The central field is a solid seafoam green, enclosed by a series of borders. The inner border consists of a golden scrolling floral vine guard stripe, followed by a primary cream-coloured border decorated with a repeating pattern of oval cartouches, each containing a small pink flower. The composition is finished with a wide, solid dark green outer guard border. The rug is constructed with a thick, plush wool pile hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation. Carving around the floral elements provides a three-dimensional effect to the design.
