Lot 384: A LARGE HAND-KNOTTED KARAJAR CARPET, CIRCA 2000

This large hand-knotted Karajar carpet is characteristic of the weaving traditions of Northwest Persia. It features a bold geometric design with a large, multi-lobed stepped central medallion in navy blue, white, and light blue, set against a vibrant terracotta field. The field is decorated with geometric floral sprays and serrated leaves. The corner spandrels are rendered in light blue with contrasting geometric motifs. The main border consists of a broad navy band featuring a repeating Samovar or turtle-and-vine pattern, flanked by ivory and terracotta guard borders with geometric meander patterns. A woven inscription is present in a cartouche located within the upper border; the Persian characters within this rectangular cartouche are not clearly legible as a specific weaver’s name or date. The carpet is constructed with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, consistent with the durable, thick-piled construction of the region. Circa 2000.
