Lot 378: AN ANTIQUE KHAMSEH RUG, PERSIA, CIRCA 1880
0 views
A Persian Khamseh tribal rug hand-knotted with a wool pile on a wool foundation. The composition features a triple vertical medallion design set upon a vibrant red field. These large, interconnected geometric medallions have stepped and latch-hooked edges, with centres of dark indigo colour containing various smaller geometric motifs and numerous stylised bird figures. The surrounding spandrels are rendered in a contrasting golden-yellow hue, decorated with further zoomorphic and floral elements. The main border consists of repeating polychrome geometric rosettes on a dark indigo ground, framed by multiple guard borders featuring floral meander and reciprocal patterns. The weave is a medium-coarse tribal construction characteristic of late 19th-century Southern Persian production.
231 x 140 cm.
