A large hand knotted Qoochan wool carpet dating from circa 1900. The rug features an all-over geometric design on a dark ground. The field is populated with three vertical columns of repeating octagonal medallions, or guls, which alternate in ground colours of terracotta red, cream, and burnt orange. Each medallion contains internal geometric cruciform and H-shaped motifs. The surrounding field is further decorated with small geometric diamonds and various filler motifs. The main border consists of a wide band featuring a geometric serrated S-shaped running dog motif in alternating colours on a cream ground. This central border is flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes featuring zig-zag and floral geometric patterns. The carpet is constructed with a wool pile on a cotton foundation.
