Lot 372: A LARGE BAKHTIAR KILIM CARPET, PERSIA, CIRCA 1900

A large hand-woven Bakhtiar kilim carpet dating to circa 1900. The rug features an all-over geometric design composed of a diagonal grid of polychrome lozenges. Each lozenge is filled with various tribal motifs, including hooked crosses and stepped geometric shapes. The central field is enclosed by multiple narrow borders, comprising a primary mustard-yellow band with repeating symbols, flanked by sawtooth guard stripes and a charcoal-ground outer border with continuous hooked patterns. The carpet is constructed from hand-spun wool on a wool foundation using a flat-weave technique. The colour palette includes shades of terracotta, rust, indigo blue, sky blue, ivory, mustard yellow, charcoal, and sage green. Significant abrash, or natural horizontal variations in colour intensity, is visible throughout the field, particularly in the terracotta and blue sections.
