A LARGE METALLIC THREAD EMBROIDERED SILK PANEL FEATURING A ROYAL TUGHRA AND MOSQUE VIGNETTES, 19TH – 20TH CENTURY

The piece is constructed from a vibrant emerald green silk satin ground, embellished with appliqued sections of magenta and cream silk. The decoration is executed in heavy gold and silver metallic bullion thread using the dival or zardozi technique, featuring raised, couched coils.

The central design consists of a large circular medallion containing a calligraphic monogram in metallic thread. The monogram is an Ottoman royal tughra, though the specific sultan is not legible as a name. This central medallion is encircled by a band of Arabic calligraphy and four smaller circular vignettes. Each vignette depicts a mosque complex with prominent domes and minarets.

The surrounding field is densely worked with scrolling foliate vines, floral motifs, and Ottoman crescent and star symbols. The outer borders contain multiple cartouches, some rectangular and others shaped, filled with further metallic thread calligraphic inscriptions. The panel is finished with a decorative gold-tone braided trim and is backed with a salmon-coloured silk lining.
