Lot 363: A CIRCULAR TURKISH KAYSERI WOOL AND METALLIC THREAD PICTORIAL RUG, 19TH - 20TH CENTURY
0 views
The central lobed medallion depicts a courtly garden scene with three seated figures, one of whom is playing a musical instrument. The surrounding field is decorated with a Shikargah hunting scene, featuring equestrian figures armed with bows and spears, interspersed with various animals including lions, deer, and rabbits among flowering trees and shrubs. The rug is framed by a complex border containing geometric fretwork patterns. The construction consists of a fine silk pile on a silk foundation, incorporating metallic thread highlights throughout the design. The perimeter is finished with an integrated long silk fringe. The reverse reveals a high knot density and the structure of the weave. I have examined the border and central medallion area for woven inscriptions; while the border features repetitive geometric patterns that resemble script, no distinct, recognizable characters or letters are visible.
