Lot 349: A COPTIC WOVEN LINEN AND WOOL TEXTILE FRAGMENT, EGYPT, 11TH - 12TH CENTURY

This is a tapestry-woven textile fragment originating from Late Antique Egypt. It is constructed from a linen ground with wool tapestry decoration in multiple decorative registers. The design features square panels enclosing circular roundels at one end, transitioning into horizontal bands of scrolling vines, stylized floral motifs, and roundels containing animal silhouettes, including birds and four-legged creatures. The palette consists of natural undyed linen, madder red, dark brown, and black wool. The central section incorporates solid bands of red and brown wool. This type of decorative band was typically used as a clavus or ornamental strip on a Coptic tunic or garment.
