Lot 350: A SELJUK SILK TEXTILE FRAGMENT WITH KUFIC CALLIGRAPHY AND FLORAL DESIGN, EAST ASIA, 11TH - 12TH CENTURY

A large vertical fragment of an antique woven silk textile, dating from the 14th or 15th century. The item is manufactured using a lampas technique, creating a light-coloured pattern against a dark brown or bronze ground. The design consists of a repeating vertical arrangement of large, heart-shaped or teardrop medallions containing dense interlacing arabesque and foliate motifs. These medallions are enclosed by borders of stylised Arabic calligraphy, likely representing benedictory phrases. Between the primary medallions are smaller foliate motifs resembling a Tree of Life or fleur-de-lis.
