Lot 308: AN ANGLO-INDIAN VIZAGAPATAM INLAID ROSEWOOD BOX, 19TH CENTURY

A nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian Vizagapatam rosewood box of rectangular form. The exterior is extensively decorated with intricate bone or ivory inlay. The hinged lid features a central panel of scrolling foliate and floral motifs, surrounded by tiered borders of repeating quatrefoil and chevron patterns. Similar quatrefoil inlay covers the front and side panels. The box is fitted with a central brass escutcheon and is supported by four small inlaid bracket feet. The interior is plain and undecorated, revealing the natural timber and two brass hinges.
