Lot 225: A SAFAVID ENGRAVED COPPER ALLOY TORCH STAND MASHAL, PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY

An engraved copper alloy torch stand, known as a mashal, of tapering cylindrical form rising from a flared pedestal base to a reinforced flared rim. The exterior is densely decorated with fine engraving, featuring a repeating pattern of interlocking split-palmette foliate scrolls known as islimi. The body is divided by two horizontal raised bands. The neck and the shoulder of the base each feature a horizontal band containing calligraphic inscriptions in Nastaliq script. The recessed areas of the engraving show remnants of original silver and gold inlay, applied using the koftgari technique. The interior chamber shows evidence of historical use, with heavy oxidation and carbon deposits. No maker name or date is legible within the calligraphic bands or elsewhere on the object.
