Lot 226: AN INDIAN SILVER KOFTGARI DAMASCENED STEEL CASKET, 19TH CENTURY

A rectangular steel casket of a form traditionally used for pen storage or jewellery, decorated using the Indian koftgari technique of silver damascening. The lid is embellished with a dense arrangement of scrolling foliate and floral arabesques within a narrow foliate border. The four side panels feature a repeating geometric lattice pattern composed of six-pointed star motifs. The interior lid contains an exceptionally well-preserved and detailed panel of bright silver foliate work. The box is raised on four outcurved scroll feet and is fitted with a hinged lid and a trilobed bud-shaped clasp.
