Lot 224: A PERSIAN QAJAR ENAMELLED COPPER QALYAN BASE AND TRIPOD STAND, 19TH CENTURY

A 19th-century Persian qalyan or water pipe base, constructed from copper with polychrome enamel decoration in the traditional mina-kari technique. The vessel consists of a flared, funnel-shaped neck and a central ovoid body, supported by a cast metal tripod stand. The decorative programme features a vibrant cobalt blue ground filled with dense floral scrolls and paisley motifs, punctuated by oval medallions containing hand-painted portraits of women in the classical Qajar courtly style. The central section of the main reservoir is designed with a series of arched brass ribs framing recessed panels. The neck is joined to the body by a turned dark wooden or patinated metal collar. The entire vessel sits within a circular brass tray supported by a tripod stand with scrolled legs and a central threaded adjustment screw. A geometric border of repeating X shapes is visible at the lower point of the enamelled section.
