Lot 212: A SET OF OTTOMAN GILT COPPER TOMBAK HORSE ORNAMENTS, TURKEY, 18TH - 19TH CENTURY

A set of linked gilt copper alloy horse ornaments of late Ottoman manufacture. The components are fashioned from copper alloy with a gilt finish using repoussé and chased techniques. The set comprises four large scalloped plaques connected by smaller circular bosses. Each plaque features a central multi-petalled rosette framed by a crescent moon, set within a field of scrolling foliage, leaves, and flowers executed in the Ottoman Baroque style. The outer edges of all pieces are perforated with small holes for attachment to a leather or textile backing. The plaques are joined by mechanical hinges. The reverse of the metalwork reveals the hand-worked nature of the repoussé and has been reinforced with rectangular iron plates secured by screws, which appear to be later additions.
