Lot 211: A LARGE TIMURID BRASS CHARGER, CENTRAL ASIA, 16TH CENTURY

A large circular brass charger of Timurid origin, featuring elaborate engraved and chased decoration throughout. The face of the charger is centred by a raised boss containing a six-pointed geometric star, surrounded by several concentric bands filled with dense, interlocking foliate arabesque scrolls and repeating stylized floral motifs. The wide underside flange is decorated with six elongated cartouches containing inscriptions in Thuluth script, separated by six circular medallions featuring complex geometric interlace patterns. The calligraphic sequences include the honorific benedictory phrases Al-izz (Glory), Al-daim (Perpetual), and wa-al-baqa (and Eternity). The metal exhibits a deep, dark oxidation patina across both the face and the underside. There are no visible maker marks, signatures, or country-of-origin stamps on the piece. The calligraphic inscriptions are standard religious or honorific phrases and do not identify a specific maker.
