Lot 210: A MAMLUK TINNED COPPER POURING VESSEL, EGYPT OR SYRIA, 15TH CENTURY

A 15th-century Mamluk tinned copper pouring vessel of characteristic form, likely originating from Egypt or Syria. The vessel features a squat, tapering cylindrical body with a flat base and a distinctive elongated spout that functions as a handle. The exterior surface is extensively decorated with hand-engraved and chased motifs arranged in horizontal registers. The central and widest band contains a bold calligraphic inscription in a thuluth script, typically comprising benedictory phrases or the titles of an anonymous official. This central register is bordered above and below by narrow bands of scrolling foliate rinceaux. The lower section of the body is encircled by a row of stylized pointed arches or arcade motifs. The elongated spout is decorated with geometric patterns, including interlocking chevrons and a central diamond-shaped lozenge. The vessel is constructed from a copper alloy with evidence of original tinning, which has worn away in areas to reveal the underlying copper.
