Lot 209: A SAFAVID TINNED COPPER WINE BOWL, PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY

This tinned copper wine bowl is of deep rounded form with a flared, everted rim and a short integral foot. The exterior is heavily decorated with incised patterns across two main registers. The upper register consists of a horizontal band containing alternating rectangular and lozenge-shaped cartouches; these are filled with intricate foliate scrollwork and calligraphic script. One rectangular cartouche features an incised inscription in Arabic characters, of which the word Sahib (meaning owner) is legible on the right side, while the following characters are obscured by wear and are not legible as a name. The lower, wider register features large, interconnected lobed medallions formed by scrolling vine work, each containing a central stylised floral palmette or boteh motif.
