Lot 198: A LARGE MAMLUK REVIVAL SILVER-INLAID BRASS FLOOR CANDLESTICK, EGYPT OR SYRIA, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A large Mamluk Revival brass candlestick of cylindrical form, constructed with three baluster knop sections, a tapering neck, and a stepped domed base. The surface is profusely decorated with silver and copper-tone metal inlay using the damascene technique, featuring alternating swirling bands of Arabic calligraphy in thuluth script and intricate foliate openwork piercing. The horizontal bands are interspersed with flower-filled ogival cartouches, while the base features calligraphic cartouches with rosette terminals. The inscriptions include common honorific formulas found on Cairo ware, such as Al-izz wa’l-iqbal (Glory and Prosperity) and li-sahibih (to its owner), though they may also contain elements of a poem. The piece is finished with complex interlacing knotwork and foliate arabesque designs throughout.
