TWO INDIAN FOLK ART CAST BRASS ANIMAL FIGURINES, MAHARASHTRA OR DECCAN, 19TH CENTURY

The horse figurine features a detailed bridle and a saddlecloth decorated with tassels and bead-like studs. Mounted on its back is a large, flared vessel with a scalloped, petal-like rim and a ribbed midsection, resembling a lotus bud or kalasha. The horse stands on a solid rectangular base. The Nandi bull, represented as the vahana of Shiva, stands on a decorative rectangular base featuring an openwork diamond lattice design. The bull is adorned with a bell necklace and a bridle, with a cylindrical holder and scrolled handle mounted on its back. Both pieces exhibit a bright, polished finish with dark oxidation and green verdigris patina in the recesses.
