Lot 183: A SRI LANKAN MIXED METAL INLAID BRASS EWER WITH ELEPHANT MOTIFS, 19TH CENTURY

A tall, tapered brass ewer featuring tri-colour mixed-metal inlay of copper and white metal. The exterior body is decorated with vertical panels of fine-line chased foliate and arabesque scrolling patterns, punctuated by three circular medallions each containing a profile representation of an elephant in relief. The neck and base are bordered by bands of geometric and scrolling motifs. The vessel is fitted with a cast brass C-scroll handle featuring a decorative thumb rest and a spurred profile, and is topped with a wide, beak-shaped spout. The interior surface is tinned.
