Lot 182: A SOUTH INDIAN TANJORE SILVER AND COPPER OVERLAID BRASS CHARGER, 19TH - 20TH CENTURY

A large circular Tanjore wall charger, comprising a brass foundation embellished with silver and copper overlays in a repoussé and chased technique. The central focus is a medallion depicting a stylised peacock with a fanned crest, rendered in silver and copper against a finely textured ground. This central motif is encircled by a ring of raised brass bosses. The field between the centre and the rim is densely engraved with scrolling foliage and arabesques, featuring six prominent star-shaped floral motifs in alternating copper and silver tones. The wide outer rim displays a continuous frieze in high relief, depicting winged figures intertwined with serpentine dragons and foliate scrolls. The piece is finished with a plain raised edge. The reverse exhibits a hammered texture with a dark natural patina and various streaks of white residue, possibly from previous polishing.
