Lot 184: A NORTH INDIAN BRASS AFTABA EWER WITH CHASED BIRD AND FLORAL DECORATION, 19TH CENTURY

An Indo-Persian brass ewer, known as an aftaba, featuring a pear-shaped body supported by three short feet. The vessel includes a long, straight, tapered spout and a scrolling C-shaped handle with a bulbous terminal. The ewer is topped with a hinged, domed lid surmounted by a decorative bud-shaped finial. The exterior is decorated with dense hand-chased and engraved ornamentation, including a repeating pattern of overlapping stylised leaves across the body. Two prominent teardrop-shaped medallions on either side of the body depict a bird amidst floral foliage and blossoming flowers. The neck, base, and spout are further embellished with fluted leaf motifs and scrolling vine patterns.
