Lot 174: AN UMAYYAD OR EARLY ABBASID BRONZE EWER, PERSIA OR MESOPOTAMIA, 8TH-9TH CENTURY

An early Islamic bronze ewer originating from Persia or Mesopotamia, dating to the Umayyad or early Abbasid period. The vessel is constructed from a copper alloy, featuring a hammered pear-shaped globular body supported by a flared pedestal base. The tall, tapering neck terminates in a wide, flared rim. It is fitted with a heavy cast handle distinguished by a tall, pierced foliate and scrollwork thumbpiece. The lower portion of the handle is segmented and terminates in a scroll where it meets the shoulder of the body. The surface is decorated with bands of incised foliate scrollwork and pseudo-calligraphic motifs around the neck and the foot.
