Lot 173: AN UMAYYAD OR EARLY ABBASID BRONZE EWER, 8TH - 9TH CENTURY

A cast bronze ewer of the Umayyad or early Abbasid period, dating to the 8th or 9th century, featuring a bulbous pear-shaped body supported by a flared circular foot. The tapering neck is detailed with a cable-molded rope-twist band at the shoulder junction and faint chased foliate decoration on the neck surface. The flared mouth terminates in a slightly scalloped or petaloid rim. A prominent S-curved handle is attached to the shoulder and rim, terminating at the top in a stylized zoomorphic head featuring a three-pointed crest and a spherical knob terminal. The underside of the foot bears a geometric design consisting of six overlapping circular arcs that form a six-petaled rosette radiating from a small central circle, incised into the bronze. No alphanumeric characters, calligraphic inscriptions, or maker names are visible on the vessel.
