Lot 17: A MULTAN GLAZED TERRACOTTA ARCHITECTURAL TILE WITH GEOMETRIC DECORATION, INDIA, 19TH CENTURY
0 views
A square Multan earthenware architectural tile featuring a complex geometric composition. The design is centred around a white interlocking fylfot motif set against a cobalt blue ground. This central element is enclosed by an interlacing border of turquoise and brownish-gold bands that form a repeating star-shaped pattern. The tile is constructed from a hand-formed reddish-brown terracotta body with a polychrome glazed surface. The reverse of the tile is characterised by a series of deep, regular diagonal indentations or keying, designed to provide a secure bond for mortar when set into an architectural structure.
