Lot 271: A PAIR OF ORIENTALIST DESERT WATERCOLOURS BY GIOVANNI BARBARO

A pair of Orientalist desert scenes executed in watercolour on paper by the artist Giovanni Barbaro. The first composition depicts a single figure mounted on a camel, carrying a long gun, as they approach the ruins of a classical temple with palm trees in the distance under a clear blue sky. The second work illustrates a group of five figures on camels traversing a sunlit desert landscape with a small cluster of palm trees in the mid-ground. Both works demonstrate the artist’s illustrative style and use of a warm colour palette to evoke the light and atmosphere of North Africa. Each watercolour is signed GIOVANNI BARBARO in the lower right corner. The works are presented in matching modern light-wood frames with cream-coloured mounts.
