Lot 262: A TURKISH OTTOMAN STYLE MOTHER-OF-PEARL AND TORTOISESHELL INLAID CASKET, 20TH CENTURY

A Turkish 20th Century wood casket of rectangular form with a stepped caddy top lid, designed in the Ottoman tradition. The exterior is extensively decorated with mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell inlays arranged in tessellated geometric diamond and zigzag patterns. The piece features bone or ivory-style stringing and a decorative shield-shaped escutcheon at the central keyhole. It is raised on four bracket feet with decorative inlay. The hinged lid opens to reveal a red velvet-lined interior containing a single lidded compartment with a small turned knob.
