A nineteenth century brass scribe’s portable writing set, commonly referred to as a divit or qalamdan, consisting of a long pen case with an integrated inkwell. The pen case is of rectangular section with a rounded end, featuring a central longitudinal band of pierced geometric openwork lattice. The inkwell is of bulbous, compressed form and features a removable fluted lid of melon shape, surmounted by a tiered and pointed finial. Beneath the primary lid is a secondary hinged inner lid. The body and lid are decorated with engraved bands of foliate and floral scrollwork. A small secondary cylindrical pot is attached to the side of the main inkwell.
