Lot 256: A LARGE DATED MAMLUK REVIVAL SILVER-INLAID COPPER CHARGER, CAIRO WARE, 1359 AH (1940-41 AD)

A large circular copper charger or tray of Cairo Ware type, produced during the Mamluk Revival period. The piece is constructed from heavy-gauge copper with an elaborate silver-inlay decorative scheme. The technique involves hammering silver wire and foil into incised recesses, with a background textured by fine stippling and cross-hatching to provide contrast. The ornamentation is organised into dense concentric bands. The primary decorative bands contain bold Thuluth calligraphy. Interspersed between these are bands of intricate scrolling foliate arabesques and circular medallions containing floral rosettes. The centre of the tray features a lobed medallion with highly stylised, interlaced Thuluth script. On the outer rim, an incised inscription includes the numerals 1359, representing the Hijri year 1359, which corresponds to approximately 1891-1892 AD.
