Lot 257: A MAMLUK REVIVAL SILVER AND COPPER INLAID BRASS BASIN, EGYPT OR SYRIA, 19TH - 20TH CENTURY

A brass basin of frustoconical form, tapering from a broad base to a slightly narrower, reinforced rim. The exterior surface is decorated with three horizontal registers of engraved and inlaid metalwork. The central band features large circular medallions containing Thuluth calligraphy, alternating with complex interlaced geometric knot patterns. The calligraphic inscriptions consist of benedictory phrases and honourifics; characters resembling Al-izz (Glory) and Al-iqbal (Prosperity) are visible. The upper and lower borders consist of bands of braided guilloche patterns and scrolling foliate arabesques. The ground is densely engraved with minute floral scrolls, originally intended to hold a black bituminous composition to provide contrast for the metal inlays. The vessel is constructed from a heavy brass alloy with decorative elements executed in silver and copper foil inlays hammered into recessed areas.
