Lot 229: A SOUTH INDIAN BRONZE FIGURE OF VISHNU, TAMIL NADU, 17TH - 18TH CENTURY

A solid-cast bronze figure of Lord Vishnu, depicted in the samabhanga posture and originating from South India, likely Tamil Nadu. The deity is represented with four arms; the upper right hand holds the sudarshana chakra (discus) and the upper left hand holds the shankha (conch shell), both flanked by stylised flames. The lower right hand is positioned in the varada mudra, signifying the granting of boons, while the lower left hand rests on the hip in the katyavalambita pose. Vishnu is adorned with a tall, conical kirita-mukuta crown and traditional jewellery including necklaces, armbands, and a sacred thread (yajnopavita). The figure stands upon a tiered circular padmasana base set on a square plinth. The reverse shows a circular sirashchakra and simplified modelling of the musculature and garments.
