Lot 212: A GROUP OF CLAY FIGURES, INDIA, KRISHNANAGAR, ATTRIBUTED TO JADUNATH PAL, 19TH CENTURY

These realistic figures are constructed from clay modelled over wire armatures and are dressed in various textile garments of differing weaves and colours. The set comprises a standing sadhu or holy man with a textured beard and turban, wearing saffron-coloured robes and bearing religious tilak markings on the forehead, chest, and arms. A second standing figure depicts a musician or dancer in a dynamic pose, dressed in a red kurta and turban. A third standing figure represents a drummer carrying a dholak under one arm, wearing a checked tunic and light-coloured dhoti. The final figure is a seated tailor positioned on a white-painted rectangular platform, engaged in sewing a piece of cloth. The three standing figures are mounted on square, sand-coloured composition bases.
