Lot 211: TWO QAJAR POLYCHROME ENAMELLED COPPER QALYAN PIPE ELEMENT, IRAN, 19TH CENTURY

A small cylindrical section crafted from copper or a similar metal alloy, decorated with painted polychrome enamel (minakari). This tubular element is characteristic of the components used in traditional Persian qalyan (water pipe) assemblies. The exterior is decorated with four oval medallions, each containing a bust portrait of a youth or young woman depicted in the 19th-century Qajar style. These figures exhibit typical features of the period, including stylized heavy-lidded eyes, joined eyebrows, and small red lips, wearing traditional headpieces. The medallions are separated by vertical panels featuring stylized floral sprays and scrollwork in red and blue against a white ground. The colour palette includes cobalt blue, iron red, copper green, and manganese purple. The top and bottom of the cylinder are finished with plain metal rims.
