Lot 213: A SET OF FOUR INDIAN POLYCHROME TERRACOTTA OCCUPATION FIGURINES IN THE STYLE OF KRISHNANAGAR, 19TH CENTURY

A set of four hand-painted polychrome terracotta figurines, attributed to the Krishnanagar region of West Bengal, India, produced for the European market during the late 19th century. These ‘caste’ or ‘occupation’ figures are mounted on circular, stepped, reddish-brown bases with green-painted tops representing ground. The group depicts four individuals in traditional dress: a man in a purple tunic with yellow piping and a white and blue turban holding a letter; a domestic servant or waiter in a black apron carrying a tray with a pith helmet or covered dish; an attendant or peon in a white tunic with a red sash and red turban carrying a small bag over his shoulder; and a labourer or porter in a brown and white patterned jacket and white dhoti carrying a large sack over his left shoulder. The figures are modelled in realistic poses with detailed traditional attire.
