Lot 201: TWO PIECES OF ARMENIAN STUDIO POTTERY BY KARAKASHIAN, PALESTINIAN JERUSALEM, 20TH CENTURY

This lot comprises a vase and a mug of Jerusalem Armenian studio pottery, bearing the marks of the Karakashian workshop. Both items are constructed from hand-painted glazed earthenware decorated in the traditional Armenian style established in Jerusalem. The decoration is executed in an underglaze palette consisting of cobalt blue, turquoise, sage green, yellow, and manganese purple. The central motif on each piece features a white gazelle set within a dense field of stylized floral sprays and foliate scrolls. The vase is of baluster form with a flared rim, featuring a band of floral rosettes at the shoulder and a scrolling border at the foot. The mug is of cylindrical form with a square-sectioned handle, decorated with a leaping gazelle and floral blooms against a deep blue ground. The bases of both pieces are hand-marked with JERUSALEM in an arc beneath a stylized monogram for the Karakashian workshop.
