Lot 178: AN INDIAN CAST BRONZE PATA GAUNTLET HANDGUARD, 18TH - 19TH CENTURY

This cast bronze handguard is from an Indian Pata, a type of gauntlet sword, likely dating to the 18th or 19th century. The piece features a semi-cylindrical form with an open reverse and a decorative hood. The upper section is cast in relief with a stylized mask-like face above a pierced sunburst motif containing a secondary face, commonly identified with the deity Surya. The lower section of the body is decorated with an intricate pierced lattice or jali pattern. Inside the hollow interior is a single horizontal crossbar which functioned as the handgrip. The top of the hood terminates in a shaped tab with a central hole used for securing the blade. Two small decorative bosses are present on the lower sides.
