Lot 38: AN OTTOMAN IMPERIAL TUGHRA OF SULTAN MAHMUD II ON PAPER, TURKEY, LATE 19TH CENTURY

This calligraphic work features the imperial tughra or monogram of Sultan Mahmud II, who reigned over the Ottoman Empire from 1808 to 1839. The piece is executed in black ink on paper and displays the traditional structural elements of an Ottoman tughra, including the sere at the base, two concentric beyze loops to the left, three vertical tugh standards, and the hancer extending to the right. The calligraphic inscription within the central sere identifies the Sultan as Mahmud, son of Abdulhamid. The reverse of the paper includes a small, illegible pencil inscription in Latin script in the lower left corner.
