Lot 37: AN ILLUMINATED QURANIC BIFOLIUM, KASHMIR, 18TH - 19TH CENTURY

This illuminated bifolium is attributed to Kashmir, dating to the 18th or 19th century based on stylistic consensus and provided keywords. The work consists of two decorative leaves, likely serving as a frontispiece or carpet page for a manuscript. Each page features a central rectangular panel containing four large circular medallions filled with gold foliate arabesques. These medallions are interconnected by a continuous band of deep blue strapwork, accented with small white and gold florets. The interstitial spaces are decorated with gold scrolling foliage on a dark ground and stylized red floral motifs within square frames. The central panels are enclosed by a broad border featuring a gold geometric interlocking pattern. Surmounting each panel is a large circular shamsa medallion with a pointed finial, decorated with dense gold arabesque designs and bordered by a blue and black scalloped edge with fine pointillist details. The work is executed on paper using hand-painted opaque pigments, including lapis lazuli blue and madder red, with applications of gold leaf.
