This illuminated manuscript bifolium on paper is identified as originating from Kashmir. The central text panels contain the Ayat al-Kursi (the Throne Verse, Quran 2:255) written in black Thuluth script. The right page begins with the Basmala and the opening of the verse, while the left page completes the verse and concludes with the phrase Sadaqa Allahu al-Azim. The calligraphy is executed on a gold leaf ground within thin red and gold ruled borders. The pages are framed by an expansive border of deep blue pigment decorated with scrolling gold vines and intricate polychrome floral motifs in the islimi style. The bifolium is presented in a modern wood frame with a marbled reddish-brown finish and a black mat.
