Lot 230: A LARGE MAMLUK REVIVAL SILVER INLAID MIXED METAL INCENSE BURNER, 20TH CENTURY

A Mamluk Revival incense burner, also known as Cairo Ware, constructed from a mixed metal alloy with silver inlay. The piece consists of a cylindrical body and a matching domed lid. The exterior is decorated with dense, hand-chased ornamentation throughout, including intricate foliate scrolls, geometric patterns, and multiple registers of Arabic calligraphy. A prominent central roundel on the body contains the calligraphic inscription Al-Alam, meaning the world or the learned. The base is supported by three stylized anthropomorphic legs fashioned after boots. The domed lid is topped with a tall, tiered finial that includes a bulbous section with pierced star-shaped vents for the release of incense smoke. The interior contains a recessed metal tray.
