Lot 226: A MAMLUK REVIVAL BRASS AND SILVER INLAID CALLIGRAPHIC BEAKER, SYRIA, 19TH CENTURY

This tapered cylindrical vessel is a Mamluk Revival brass beaker, often referred to as Cairo Ware, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The piece is constructed from brass and features extensive silver colored metal inlay. The decorative program is organized into horizontal registers, with a prominent central band containing an Arabic inscription in thuluth script. This calligraphic register is framed by two secondary bands of interlocking braided knotwork. The lower portion of the beaker is decorated with scrolling foliate arabesques and stylized palmettes that terminate above a plain brass base. The background of the inlaid areas is densely stippled to provide textural contrast to the smooth silver and brass surfaces.
