Lot 225: A MAMLUK REVIVAL SILVER AND COPPER INLAID BRASS BOWL, SYRIA, 19TH CENTURY

This globular brass vessel is an example of Mamluk Revival metalwork, commonly known as Cairoware, produced in Egypt or Syria during the late 19th or early 20th century. The vessel is constructed of brass and features intricate silver and copper inlays applied using a damascene technique. The decorative program consists of large scalloped cartouches containing Arabic calligraphy in thuluth script executed in silver. These panels are interspersed with complex arabesque designs, foliate scrolls, and stylized floral motifs in both silver and copper. A secondary band of inlaid calligraphy encircles the short, constricted neck. The background surfaces are finely chased with a dense pattern of minute scrolling foliage. The base is finished with a copper-inlaid rope-twist border.
