Lot 167: A SGRAFFITO SPLASHWARE POTTERY BOWL, PERSIA, NISHAPUR, 10TH CENTURY

This footed ceramic bowl is an example of medieval Islamic splashware sgraffito pottery attributed to 10th century Nishapur. The object is constructed from earthenware with a light colored slip and a lead glaze. It features sgraffito decoration where linear patterns are incised through the slip. The interior well contains three large manganese brown splotches separated by incised radiating lines enclosed in leaf like frames. The rim is decorated with a series of manganese brown dots. The glaze is applied in a splashed technique using green, yellow, and manganese brown pigments. The exterior of the bowl displays wide, vertical bands of manganese brown paint arranged in groups over the slip. There are no visible maker marks, signatures, or calligraphic inscriptions.
