AN UMAYYAD LEAD-GLAZED EARTHENWARE ARCHITECTURAL BORDER TILE, EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN, 8TH – 9TH CENTURY

An Umayyad architectural border tile of rectangular form, constructed from earthenware with a moulded relief decoration. The relief features three mythical beasts, possibly dragons or hounds, positioned amongst scrolling foliate motifs. The entire front surface is covered in a vibrant green lead glaze. The reverse of the tile is unglazed, revealing a reddish-orange clay body with patches of buff-coloured earth. There are some irregular dark markings on the left-hand side of the reverse, which appear to be accidental smudges or surface soil rather than an intentional mark or inscription. No readable maker marks or characters are present on the front or back of the piece.
