Lot 7: A PAIR OF TIMURID CUT-MOSAIC POTTERY TILES, CENTRAL ASIA OR PERSIA, 14TH - 15TH CENTURY

A matching pair of architectural ceramic tiles executed in the cut-mosaic technique. Each tile is composed of individual glazed ceramic tesserae precisely shaped and set into a thick grey mortar bed. The tiles are formed as elongated double-lozenges, narrowing at a central join marked by a small circular white glazed tile. The decorative scheme features a turquoise border enclosing a deep cobalt blue field. Centred within each bulbous section of the lozenge is a symmetrical, stylised foliate motif in ochre, containing a black almond-shaped element at its core. This specific style of tilework, involving the assembly of pre-cut glazed shapes, is characteristic of Timurid architectural decoration found in 14th and 15th-century Central Asia and Persia.
