Lot 73: A PAHARI MINIATURE PAINTING DEPICTING RADHA AND KRISHNA IN A PAVILION, 19TH CENTURY

An Indian miniature painting executed in the Pahari school style, likely originating from the Kangra or Guler workshops of Northern India. The composition illustrates a devotional scene of Radha and Krishna in a moment of dalliance. The blue-skinned deity Krishna is seated within a white marble architectural pavilion, leaning against a green bolster. He wears a traditional yellow dhoti and is adorned with pearl necklaces and jewellery. He is embraced by Radha, who is dressed in an orange garment and a translucent white veil. The interior of the pavilion is framed by a yellow canopy decorated with intricate gold floral motifs against a dark background. To the left, two female attendants, or sakhis, are depicted in profile on a terracotta-coloured terrace, engaged in conversation. The background features the white-washed turrets and rooftops of a palace complex set against a pale sky with stylized trees. The work is enclosed within a sophisticated border arrangement consisting of an inner dark blue margin decorated with a continuous scrolling gold foliate pattern, followed by thin white and yellow ruled borders. The painting is created using opaque pigments and gold on paper.
